After several failed attempts I finally found one of the two black redstarts that have been spotted here in Aberystwyth.
For some reason the birds have chosen to set up residence on the Old College building, one of the university properties on the promenade. Even now, when the building is covered in scaffolding and undergoing noisy construction work the birds don’t seem in any hurry to leave!

The photographs below are of the female bird. I hope to photograph the male before both birds migrate to their wintering grounds, but on this occasion he was nowhere to be found.



With less than 50 resident breeding pairs in the UK, these birds are on the Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern
Black redstarts are a relative of the robin and are only visitors to the UK, usually seen between April and October.
