Despite a drizzly morning and a thorough soaking, nothing could dampen this male pigeon’s spirits today. He and his mate provided me with great entertainment as he pursued her in circles like a hyperactive wind up toy. Whilst he clearly had just one thing on his mind, his mate was less than enamoured and gave him quite the runaround!
In pigeons, this chasing behaviour is known as ‘driving’ and is the male bird’s way of steering his potential partner away from any other males who might attempt to mate with her.
After an exhausting morning the male was eventually rewarded with the pigeon equivalent of a kiss from his female before the pair flew off together for a little privacy!
