Whilst the wildflowers have been left to thrive in and around Aberystwyth, many of the ornamental flower beds and planters lie bare and empty. With only essential workers still in operation the council have no one to get out planting and so have resorted to giving their surplus flowers and plants away to locals to ensure they at least don’t go to waste.
With several trays of marigolds, livingstone daisies and sweet allisons acquired, myself and other residents of South beach transformed a couple of the abandoned flowers beds into a new display to brighten up the area and hopefully spread a little joy.
In just a few hours we cleared the tangle of weeds and dug through the stony soil, baked hard during a particularly dry month, not an easy task!
Whilst we didn’t have a huge number of plants to distribute, a few kind residents also donated from their own gardens and in the end the beds didn’t look too sparse. It was tough work, but well worth the effort and a rewarding little project to be involved in.
The marigolds are already striking with their full orange flowers, and hopefully it wont be long before the rest of the flowers begin to emerge. Hopefully they will bring a smile to the faces of the local residents out on their walks, and those looking out from their windows in the street above.
