Another superb evening to catch up with our famous Aberystwyth starlings as an overcast sky cleared just in time to produce a rather lovely sunset.
I opted to use my wide angle lens again today and this turned out to be a wise decision as the starlings appeared from all different directions making it difficult to know which part of the sky to focus on for the best views.
As more and more small groups darted in they were quickly absorbed into the main body of the flock forming a swirling, towering above the pier. The numbers were vast and breathtaking, probably the highest number seen so far this season. Estimates suggest during the peak this flock could contain up to 20,000 birds!
Despite the optimum conditions there was sadly no dramatic, high energy murmurations to see or capture today although seeing the enormous gathering against such a beautiful backdrop could hardly be a disappointment.
For those of you far away or unable to get out to see this wonder for yourself, you can watch the Aberystwyth starlings LIVE each evening for the next two weeks on the BBC Winterwatch cameras.
Don’t forget to tune in shortly before sunset for the best views! https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/eqwz3d/live/cbmj3d
